Choosing a kitchen worktop in the UAE is not the same as choosing one in Europe. Our heat, hard water, strong sunlight and humidity all change how these materials behave over time. This guide compares the three most common choices honestly — including where each one is the wrong answer.
The short answer
- Choose Corian if you want long seamless runs, an integrated sink with no rim to trap dirt, curved or custom shapes, and the ability to repair scratches years later.
- Choose quartz if you cook heavily, want maximum scratch resistance, and prefer a natural stone look with no sealing.
- Choose granite if you want genuine natural stone with unique patterning and high heat tolerance, and you do not mind resealing it periodically.

What actually matters in the UAE
Hard water and limescale
Water in much of the UAE is hard. On a porous surface, repeated splashes and evaporation leave mineral marks that eventually stain. This is the strongest practical argument for a non-porous surface — Corian and quartz both qualify, granite does not unless it is kept properly sealed.
Sunlight
If your worktop runs past a large window or continues onto a terrace, ask specifically about UV stability. Prolonged direct sun can discolour some engineered surfaces over years. Shaded interior runs are rarely a problem for any of the three.
Long islands and villa kitchens
Large villa kitchens often need runs longer than any single slab. In stone, that means a visible seam. In Corian, the joins are bonded and sanded flat, so a five-metre island reads as one continuous surface. If a seamless look matters to you, this is the deciding factor.
Hygiene
A seamless integrated sink has no rim, no silicone line and no lip where residue collects. That is why solid surface is common in clinics, laboratories and food preparation areas — and it is a genuine advantage in a family kitchen too.
Where Corian is the wrong choice
We fabricate Corian, and we would still tell you not to use it in these cases:
- You put hot pans straight down. Solid surface has the lowest heat tolerance of the three. If a trivet is never going to happen in your kitchen, choose quartz or granite.
- You want real stone. Corian is a manufactured surface. It can imitate stone convincingly, but if you want the depth and randomness of a natural slab, buy natural stone.
- Heavy chopping directly on the surface. It will scratch. Those scratches can be sanded out later, but quartz simply will not mark in the first place.
Being honest about this saves everyone a bad outcome. A surface chosen for the wrong reason becomes a complaint within a year.
Cost in the UAE
All three overlap heavily in price, and the material is rarely the biggest number on the quote. What actually moves the total is:
- Total square metres and the number of cut-outs (sink, hob, sockets)
- Edge detail — a simple square edge costs less than a built-up or shaped profile
- Whether you want an integrated sink or a separate one
- Splashbacks, upstands and window sills in matching material
- Template, delivery, installation and removal of the old worktop
Always compare quotes on the same scope. A cheaper price per square metre with cut-outs, edging and installation excluded is not cheaper.
Questions to ask any supplier
- Is this genuine branded solid surface, and what thickness?
- How many seams will my layout have, and where exactly?
- Is the sink integrated or dropped in?
- What is included — template, cut-outs, edging, delivery, installation, old worktop removal?
- What is the lead time from template to installation?
- What happens if it is damaged in two years — can it be repaired in place?
